Share the Spirit Wall Unveiling

A special Share the Spirit celebration was held at Southwest Airlines Headquarters on May 31, 2007. Hosted by Colleen, the event kicked off “Share the Spirit” as an ongoing Companywide effort. Share the Spirit is now the “official” term we will use to describe any effort where Southwest is giving back—either through volunteer activities in our communities or by way of donations to nonprofit and charitable organizations.

To celebrate our Employees who volunteer their time to make a positive difference, a special Share the Spirit wall was unveiled. Twenty deserving Employees or groups of Employees were honored with a permanent plaque on the wall. Each year, we will add more plaques.

Photo 1 The 111th Annual PTA National Convention was held in St. Louis on June 30, 2007. The highest national PTA award for Excellence in Educational Partnership was given to Van Bokkelen Elementary School in Severn, Maryland for their many outside collaborations developed to help students and families succeed. Van Bokkelen is a Title I school where more than 90% of the students receive free/reduced-price lunch. The PTA has been implementing programs and partnerships to change the face of the school, one of which is the Southwest Airlines Adopt-A-Pilot program. After five years of being on the Maryland State Department of Education’s takeover list, Van Bokkelen has made adequate yearly progress for the past three years!

A couple dozen Southwest Airlines Employees spent an entire day at the Museum of the American Railroad painting a caboose. This historical piece is one of the visual attractions for guided tours and educational programs. The group from Technology had such a great experience that they are already planning their next Share the Spirit event.
